Founded in Montreal in 1869, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was the first animal-welfare organization in Canada. In its early years, the SPCA concentrated primarily on improving the treatment of work horses, which were used all across the island of Montreal. The SPCA has come a long way since its beginnings: today, it is the largest animal-protection organization in Quebec, speaking on behalf of animals wherever there is ignorance, cruelty, exploitation or neglect.
The Montreal SPCA is pleased to welcome groups of volunteers from companies in all sectors who wish to lend a hand over the course of a half day. Besides making a concrete contribution to our wonderful cause, corporate volunteering is an opportunity for your team to enjoy an enriching and rewarding experience.
‍
Volunteering can involve a variety of tasks, such as cleaning the yard or premises, painting, filing or unloading merchandise. You could also make enrichment toys for the animals or put together craft kits for use in our classroom presentations! A 45-minute guided tour will allow you to discover what life is like at the shelter for our residents, staff members and volunteers.
‍
Please note: For biosecurity and safety reasons, your team may observe the animals, but will not have any direct contact with them. The shelter takes in animals of all species, some are sick and others fearful. Despite having the best animal welfare practices in place, the shelter is no substitute for a comfortable and peaceful home, and it remains a stressful environment for most of them. Therefore, we are both cautious for our visitors’ sake and sensitive to our animals’ need for quiet.
‍
While this help is very much appreciated, we must limit corporate volunteering to two days a month, so as not to slow down the shelter’s operations. We require a minimum contribution of $1,750 in the form of a charitable donation from the company. The Montreal SPCA is a registered charity that relies on public donations to fulfill its mission. By adding a donation to your time, you are improving animals’ lives and enabling us to pursue our mission on their behalf. To request a day or half a day of corporate volunteering, please fill out the form on our website here.
